Season 29 Draft News
Week 1
"Tweet: Speed runs in the family - Blessed with the speed of his father, a former Olympian, WR Andrew Young is making a name for himself at Stanford."
SMLE Draft Expert: Young looks fast when in pads but we've seen some recent players flop at the combine after being hyped up. Regardless of his measurable speed, Young runs extremely crisp routes and isn't afraid to catch over the middle.
Combine Review: 6.6 - Blazing speed!!!! Decent agility but not much in vertical or strength.
Player Comparison: DeSean Jackson - similar size and will make a living being a one trick pony deep threat.
Draft Prediction: Top10 - combine blown away by speed alone!
Week 5
"Brick Wall - LE Ray Cobb had been terrorizing opposing offenses this season, until he ran up against RT B.J. Atkinson this week. Atkinson was the key to Idaho's win"
SMLE Draft Expert: Atkinson was looking like he was having an average season, set to be drafted in the middle rounds and Cobb was talking smack to every OL he went against. Atkinson ate tonnes of film and worked out a technique to handle Cobb's limited moves. That has scouts screaming about his high ceiling.
Combine Review: 5.6 - Improved on his agility with ok speed but the agility training took away from his strength.
Player Comparison: Rob Havestein - Physically ungifted OL who relies on technique to win the one on one.
Draft Prediction: Rounds 2 to 3 - Not an elite OL but team needs push OL up.
SMLE Draft Expert: Cobb is a big man, who drives straight at you and low. There's no finesse just raw power. He's a great run defender but the scouts have taken note of his lack of moves and that he's just a 2down DL which is a dying breed in a pass first league.
Combine Review: 6.0 - The lack of finesse showed with a slow stiff combine but decent strength.
Player Comparison: Adrian Clayborn - Big bodied DE that struggled with his pass rush moves early on in his career.
Draft Prediction: Rounds 2 to 3 - He's got talent, just not spread across the board.
Week 6
"Tweet: Maybe his injury delays the start of his NFL career, but WR Ravonne King is going to help any offense he's part of...eventually"
SMLE Draft Expert: King showed up at the combine ready to show his recovery but the injury has sapped his speed and agility. In an ideal world he'd move to TE but can't block. This is a redzone weapon though with decent catching ability.
Combine Review: 7.0 - Slow, quite slow, with bad hips but can get vertical!!!
Player Comparison: Ramses Barden - Slow super tall vertical WR with limited catching ability.
Draft Prediction: Round 3 to 5 - A coach will have a need for a big TD machine but he's not seeing the field until the redzone.
"Tweet: The NFL is much more physical than college. Will DL Eilar Chatman be up for the rigors of pro football?"
SMLE Draft Expert: Chatman looks like a bully one on one using power to overwhelm blockers but his lack of technique, conditioning and agility makes him easy to scheme against. He'll have to develop as a NT and the coach hopes he grows up.
Combine Review: 6.8 - Looked fast and strong with decent burst but only straight line speed.
Player Comparison: Akiem Hicks - Big man with run defense skills but relies on physicality and size to win matchups.
Draft Prediction: Round 3 to 4 - It's a great looking DL class and he's sure to drop.
Week 7
"Tweet: hard to scout LOLB Nicholas Gray. Looks like a totally different player week to week."
SMLE Draft Expert: Gray is an old school thumper. 250lbs and brings the pain train. He's so single minded on that he often neglects his run gaps and has terrible block shed technique.
Combine Review: 7.0 - Great combine to restore his stock, decent speed but great strength and excellent hips!
Player Comparison: Alec Ogletree - inconsistent LB who hits hard but sheds soft.
Draft Prediction: Round 1 to 2 - he did well enough at the combine and looks like a great field general who brings the pain!
Week 9
"Tweet: Don't be put off by QB Tate Levy's play lately. Still a tonne of potential there."
SMLE Draft Expert: Levy plays under Centre in a run heavy scheme, he's not asked to do much because he can't do much but he's a wizard at getting the offense set and faking it in play action.
Combine Review: 4.6 - He's got enough mobility to bootleg but he wont get far.
Player Comparison: Matt Leinhart - Pro ready passer who gets happy feet and checks down.
Draft Prediction: Round 2 to 4 - market for passers will be less now more coaches have "their guy" but he's a great backup.
Week 10
"Tweet: teams are coveting LG Berry Copeland and what he brings to an O-line. He won't be around long in the NFL draft."
SMLE Draft Expert: Copeland is getting rave reviews for his pass blocking footwork and finesse which suits the new pass happy NFL but some old school coaches won't like his soft attitude to run blocking and lack of aggression.
Combine Review: 5.7 - His lack of dedication showed with poor speed and strength but ok burst.
Player Comparison: Zack Fulton - he doesn't drive guys but is a great pass block technician.
Draft Prediction: Round 2 to 3 - OL is still high value in the draft but Copeland is one dimensional.
Week 11
"Tweet: hasn't been a DB this year that can cover WR Griffin Anthony. Just keeps making big plays."
SMLE Draft Expert: Defenses have tried everything, fowling, penalties, press, but noone can stop the quick release and lightning openness of Anthony. He is a master of his route tree in college and is deaf to the footsteps over the middle.
Combine Review: 5.4 - Disappointing combine, looked slow and stiff but still has technique.
Player Comparison: Jarvis Landry - similar size and build who gets open quick and plays fierce.
Draft Prediction: Round 3 to 4 - Slot receivers aren't at a huge premium and he flopped the combine.
Week 14
"Tweet: Roby knows this is the most important part of the season, and it showed this week when he dominated opposing blockers."
SMLE Draft Expert: Roby plays angry, high effort, hard hitting football with a knack for plugging lanes. He's not a great pass rusher so his stock could drop in a league that values sacks.
Combine Review: 6.6 - Decent speed and burst with elite strength. Great combine.
Player Comparison: Gerald McCoy - high potential DT who needed to polish his game.
Draft Prediction: Round 1 - the draft class is pretty good at DT but he's clearly a top DT talent.
Week 15
"Heisman History - ROLB Kelcy Morris added his name to the brief list of defensive players to win the Heisman Trophy, taking home the award at today's ceremony in New York City."
SMLE Draft Expert: Morris did well in a scheme that benefited him and offenses not double teaming him due to a lack of respect for his consistency and effort. He'll need to show up at the combine ready to impress with his effort and natural athleticism.
Combine Review: 6.1 - Kelce didn't flash, ok speed and agility with ok strength and good size.
Player Comparison: Jamie Collins - Did great in a certain scheme but away from good coaching his potential faltered.
Draft Prediction: Round 1 - he cemented his stock but his combine doesn't wow and he could drop to the back end of the 1st.
Superbowl
"Tweet: love seeing a defender get his hands on that mvp award at the All Star game. Way to go SS Tre Huggins."
SMLE Draft Expert: Huggins made the mvp by being complete in every aspect of his game. He's long and can hit and cover but needs a good combine to show off that range. There's bigger hitters and better cover guys this draft but not many who do both.
Combine Review: 6.9 - Super fast with great hips and decent strength. Great safety!
Player Comparison: John Johnson iii - doesn't flash in any one area but complete solid all around safety.
Draft Prediction: Round 1 - it's a loaded safety class with some better big hitters
Combine
"Tweet: RE Victor Carroll looked awesome against LT Clay Fitzsimmons at the All-Star game. And that says a LOT."
SMLE Draft Expert: It's a tough comparison with Fitzsimmons specialising in bigger DEs but Carroll played big when he needed too. Most of the game was Carroll taking the horn on a swivelling LT who looked lost.
Combine Review: 6.3 - Great speed and burst with fantastic bend, a bit weak though.
Player Comparison: Yannick Ngakoue - Undersized speedster who plays bigger than he is.
Draft Prediction: Top16 - The combination of moves and speed means he doesn't last long.
SMLE Draft Expert: Fitzsimmons can bounce back from this game but his stock as the 1st OL taken in this draft is shot. He can block, just not quickly. A good combine will cement a late 1st or 2nd round stock.
Combine Review: 5.6 - The combine confirmed that Fitzsimmons is a bit of a statue on the edge but still has strength and technique.
Player Comparison: Robert Gallery - Big and talented OT with stiff hips and bad first step but too long to play inside OL.
Draft Prediction: End of round 1 or round 2 - OL is always at a premium.
"Tweet: WR Davin Logan was something to see at the Combine. Out of this world. Hands like glue."
SMLE Draft Expert: Logan has flown under the radar so fat with Young taking the limelight but the combine was his time to shine! And boy he did! He didn't look like a straight out burner but showed he has very fluid routes to get open. He's a more complete WR but less of a weapon.
Combine Review: 6.9 - Good speed and great burst with flashy feet, hands are questionable.
Player Comparison: Christian Kirk - Great athleticism only help back by his development and hands
Draft Prediction: Round 1 - He might slide with all the talent about but he's a steal if he drops to the 2nd round.
"Tweet: Florida DL Kelsay was not in the best condition at the Combine. And it showed in his results."
SMLE Draft Expert: Brody Kelsey was expected to wow at the Combine in order to compete in this legendary defensive class, but instead was pushed out of Day1 by turning up slower and less agile than expected. He's not stuck on inside DL but still showed good bulk and strength.
Combine Review: 6.9 - Okay agility, speed and burst but with good size and strength.
Player Comparison: Brett Kiesel - Blue collar bruiser good against the run with limited athleticism.
Draft Prediction: Round 2 to 3 - In this draft it's about WHEN the defenders start to run out, Kelsay gets picked at the end of that.
Pro Day
"Tweet: No player's done more to improve his draft stick than C Timothy Reiff. His physical tools are too much to ignore."
SMLE Draft Expert: Reiff backed up his combine numbers during his pro day and looks like a day 1 plug and play starter. He showcased his great power and versitility through a series of various run concepts. But it's a risk if you're drafting him expecting to pass a lot.
Combine Review: 6.1 - Decent speed, burst and lateral movement but showed elite strength.
Player Comparison: Billy Price - super strong C drafted on potential and attitude and hoping technique developed.
Draft Prediction: Top20 - It's a weak OL class and they usually go high but anyone drafting him misses on the elite defensive prospects.
